AMAZONIEN – EXPEDITION IN DEN REGENWALD – TERRA X

Der größte zusammenhängende Regenwald der Erde ist lebenswichtig für das globale Klima – und bedroht: Jede Minute brennt im Amazonasgebiet eine Waldfläche von drei Fußballfeldern ab. Noch sind 80 Prozent des Gesamtgebiets intakt. Eine faszinierende Reise begleitet renommierte Wissenschaftler und ihre aktuellen Forschungsprojekte.

The Earth's largest contiguous rainforest is vital to the global climate — and under threat: every minute, a forest area the size of three football pitches burns in the Amazon. Eighty percent of the total area is still intact. A fascinating journey accompanies renowned scientists and their current research projects.

Im Rahmen des internationalen Forschungsprojekts AmazonFACE wird untersucht, wie sich die zunehmende Erderwärmung auf das empfindliche Ökosystem auswirkt. Im Schutzgebiet Cantão patrouillieren Naturschützer für stark gefährdete Tierarten wie Araguaia-Flussdelfine, Flachlandtapire und Riesenotter – in einer Feuchtsavanne mit mehr Fischarten als in ganz Europa.

The international research project AmazonFACE investigates how increasing global warming affects this fragile ecosystem. In the Cantão protected area, conservationists patrol for critically endangered species such as Araguaia river dolphins, lowland tapirs and giant otters — in a wetland savanna with more fish species than all of Europe.

Rund 300 verschiedene indigene Völker verleihen Amazonien ein besonderes Gesicht. Auf 27.000 Quadratkilometern Wildnis im oberen Xingú-Gebiet leben rund 15 Stämme der Xingu-Indianer – darunter die Matipu, die ein uraltes Trauerritual mit Tanz, kollektivem Weinen und Ringkämpfen pflegen.

Some 300 different indigenous peoples give the Amazon its unique character. Across 27,000 square kilometres of wilderness in the upper Xingú region, around 15 tribes of the Xingu peoples live — among them the Matipu, who practise an ancient mourning ritual of dance, collective weeping and wrestling.
