Seit Jahrhunderten durchstreift eines der berühmtesten Fabelwesen unsere Kulturgeschichte: in Kunstwerken, auf Wappen und Altären, in Fantasyfilmen, als Symbol queerer Identität und als Ikone der Popkultur.
The unicorn, they say, has lived in hiding since time immemorial — and shows itself, if at all, only for a fleeting moment and from a distance. For centuries, one of the most famous mythical creatures has roamed our cultural history: in artworks, on coats of arms and altarpieces, in fantasy films, as a symbol of queer identity and as an icon of popular culture.
Die Ursprünge des Mythos reichen bis ins 2. Jahrtausend vor Christus zurück. Im Laufe der Zeit hat das Einhorn zahlreiche Bedeutungen vereint: Es galt als heilend und zerstörerisch, wild und unbezähmbar, zugleich als Sinnbild der Reinheit und Unschuld.
The origins of the myth reach back to the 2nd millennium BC. Over time, the unicorn has united many meanings: it was considered healing and destructive, wild and untameable, at once a symbol of purity and innocence.
Die Dokumentation begibt sich auf Spurensuche – unter anderem in der Einhorn-Ausstellung im Museum Barberini in Potsdam, begleitet von Chefkurator Michael Philipp. Warum bietet das Einhorn seit jeher eine so große Projektionsfläche? Wie weckt ein Tier, das nie existierte, über Jahrtausende eine so reale Sehnsucht?
The documentary sets out on a search for clues — including at the unicorn exhibition at the Museum Barberini in Potsdam, guided by chief curator Michael Philipp. Why has the unicorn always offered such a large canvas for projection? How does an animal that never existed awaken such a real longing across millennia?
