Nichts im Kosmos ist fest, alles ist im Wandel. Es gibt keinen Anfang und kein Ende. Das beschreibt der „Kreis der Wandlungen“, Wu Xing – die jahrtausendealte chinesische Lehre der fünf Elemente Holz, Feuer, Erde, Metall und Wasser. Eng verknüpft mit dem Daoismus, prägt sie bis heute alle Lebensbereiche des modernen Chinas und hat weit über die Landesgrenzen hinaus Einzug gehalten.

Nothing in the cosmos is fixed — everything is in flux. There is no beginning and no end. This is what the "cycle of transformations", Wu Xing, describes — the millennia-old Chinese teaching of the five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Closely linked to Taoism, it still shapes every aspect of modern Chinese life today and has spread far beyond China's borders.

Über 200 Drehtage in 15 Monaten waren Regisseur Jan Hinrik Drevs und der neuseeländische Abenteuer-Kameramann Mike Single in China unterwegs – eine filmische Reise durch alle Jahreszeiten und Klimazonen, von der Hitze der Wüsten bis zum ostchinesischen Meer, von ländlichen Dörfern bis in die Megacities.

Over 200 shooting days across 15 months, director Jan Hinrik Drevs and New Zealand adventure cinematographer Mike Single travelled throughout China — a cinematic journey through all seasons and climate zones, from the heat of the deserts to the East China Sea, from rural villages to the megacities.

Das Werk erscheint in zwei Fassungen: als fünfteilige Serie (5×52 MIN), die jedem Element eine eigene Episode widmet, und als Kinodokumentarfilm „Balance of the Five Elements“ (1×90 MIN). Ein Film, der essentiell zum Verständnis von Kultur, Philosophie und Gesellschaft beiträgt und den Dialog des Westens mit China befördert.

The work appears in two versions: as a five-part series (5×52 MIN), dedicating one episode to each element, and as a cinema documentary "Balance of the Five Elements" (1×90 MIN). A film that makes an essential contribution to understanding culture, philosophy and society, and promotes dialogue between the West and China.
