What connects a remote indigenous community in Borneo with the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo? The film captures the beauty of the tropical rainforest as well as the millennia-old relationship of the indigenous Dayak people with their forest.

Borneo, größtenteils indonesisches Staatsgebiet, ist die drittgrößte Insel der Welt und einer der wichtigsten Regenwald-Regionen der Erde. Noch vor 60 Jahren war sie nahezu vollständig von Primärwald bedeckt und beherbergt eine weltweit einzigartige Artenvielfalt.

Borneo, mostly Indonesian territory, is the third-largest island in the world and one of the most important rainforest regions on earth. Just 60 years ago it was almost entirely covered by primary forest and harbours a globally unique biodiversity.

Doch der Wald wird in immer größerem Ausmaß gerodet: Große Holzkonzerne machen Naturwald frei für Palmöl und Bauholz – darunter Tropenhölzer, die schlussendlich in den Olympia-Stadien von Tokio verbaut wurden. Der Film verfolgt die Lieferketten, hinterfragt Gütesiegel und Nachhaltigkeitsversprechen und gibt jenen eine Stimme, die diesen Wald seit Generationen als Heimat kennen.

Yet the forest is being cleared on an ever-larger scale: major timber corporations clear natural forest for palm oil and construction timber — including tropical hardwoods that ultimately ended up in the Olympic stadiums of Tokyo. The film traces supply chains, questions certification schemes and sustainability pledges, and gives voice to those who have known this forest as home for generations.
