Die Balkanhalbinsel ist eine der drei südeuropäischen Halbinseln und 500.000 Quadratkilometer groß – das Tor zwischen Okzident und Orient. Ihr Name verweist auf ihren natürlichen Reichtum: BALKAN – „Berge mit viel Wald“. Die UNESCO zählt sie heute zu den weltweit bedeutendsten Regionen mit ökologischer Vielfalt.

The Balkan Peninsula is one of the three southern European peninsulas, covering 500,000 square kilometres — the gateway between Occident and Orient. Its name reflects its natural riches: BALKAN — "mountains with much forest". UNESCO now counts it among the world's most significant regions of ecological diversity.
